Together we put actuaries at the heart of key debates

Together, we supported your continued learning by creating content about and for the actuarial community that the wider media may not provide, and ensuring that actuaries contribute to the highest quality thought leadership.

The IFoA’s ongoing Thought Leadership series, which seeks to position the actuarial profession at the heart of the critical narratives shaping our society, this year featured former Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies, President of the Royal Society Sir Adrian Smith, and statistician Sir David Spiegelhalter, who shared his insight on the pandemic.

Actuaries leading society's thinking

Over the past year, the ongoing Thought Leadership series has helped promote innovative thinking, debate and discussion both within and beyond the actuarial profession.

The new approach seeks to reposition the IFoA at the centre of key societal issues, some of which are profoundly actuarial, and some which reach out beyond actuarial thought. It strives to cut through the noise, add to the debate and move the conversation forward, while engaging and inspiring our audience, whether that be actuaries, politicians, regulators, academics or the public.

‘’The actuarial profession has an important role to play in addressing society’s wider social, economic and health issues.’’

Reinventing the profession

We live in a changed world. The fourth industrial revolution, globalisation, and the Covid-19 pandemic mean that the social and business models are being up-ended worldwide, and changes that were once predictable and steady are now far faster and more profound. In response to this tumultuous transformation, Tan Suee Chieh, IFoA President 2020-21, led a call to re-invent the profession for a transformed present and dynamic future. In a series of videos and podcasts entitled Reinventing the Profession, together we explored the vision, mindsets, skills, and domains that the profession will need to adopt to succeed, flourish and play a positive societal role in our global community.
