Together we supported the IFoA Foundation

The IFoA Foundation is the dedicated charitable arm of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Launched in 2020, we work in the UK and key territories around the world, pursuing our vision to open every door for the next generation of actuaries, and to empower the profession to be transformative in addressing global challenges. At the end of its second year, the IFoA Foundation continues to make a real difference to the lives of talented and ambitious young people by helping them overcome financial barriers to becoming tomorrow’s actuaries. The Foundation also provides recognition, prizes and awards for excellence in actuarial examinations and academic research.

Thanks to you

Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over £700,000 from generous Founding Patrons, major individual donors, members and corporate partners. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you.

Here are just some of the Foundation’s key achievements towards our three objectives in the last year:

Supporting our community

education hardship grants awarded to assist disadvantaged aspiring actuaries, enabling determined young people to not give up on an actuarial career

students empowered to study through the Actuarial Academy of East Africa e-learning platform pilot, creating an accessible career path with mentoring and practical support

mentee places created for recent graduates in the Actuarial Mentoring Programme, and 170 applicants engaged in the open, global selection process

“I am grateful to the IFoA Foundation for providing me with the support needed to complete my final year and ensure I remain focused on my studies. Graduating with a First-Class degree gave me a strong sense of accomplishment, acting as a testament to the work I have put in. In addition to this, I have been offered an actuarial position in London upon completion of my studies. Without the support from the IFoA Foundation, I do not know if this would have been possible. I aim to continuously give back to the actuarial community, and to one day help someone in the position I was in.”
Moez Abidi, Education Grant beneficiary

Rewarding excellence

scholarships awarded to top-performing final-year students globally, supporting their transition from university to employment and IFoA Fellowship.

prizes awarded, recognizing excellence in actuarial examinations and academic research.

“It is a great pleasure for me to win the China and South-East Asia (CSEA) Scholarship…. I am deeply grateful to the philanthropists who founded the IFoA Foundation and donated money to students who are aspiring to engage in the actuarial industry. The waiver of the admission fees, subscription fees for the first year and exemption fees mean a lot to our students without income currently.”
Ms Qiuyue Liu, CSEA Scholarship beneficiary

Addressing future challenges

primary state school pupils across London engaged in mathematical challenges, growing confidence, encouraging team work and instilling the message that maths is fun

girls from diverse backgrounds all over the UK were inspired by school encounters with professional role models who use maths in their careers

Scottish secondary schools challenged students to use maths to improve the world through our bespoke Climate Change Quiz, created with the help of IFoA members

“Count on Us has raised the profile of maths in a way that doesn't always involve numbers. I had a child at the start of the programme tell me that this wasn't maths because it was fun! It has helped change attitudes towards maths and encourage more children to give things a go.”
Teacher, Yeading Primary School, Hillingdon

Working with partners

Our Founding Partners gave generous donations and invaluable expert support to ensure the Foundation could deliver on its vision and commitment to increase access and inclusion within the profession.

Our ability to deliver long-term for the profession depends on the ongoing generosity of actuaries across the globe, joining in our mission of ‘Actuaries supporting others’ and committing to regular donations hand in hand with membership. The Foundation is only able to achieve its impact due to the generosity of our members and Founding Partners.

“Together we are demonstrating how the generosity of the members and supporters of the profession can open doors for the next generation and empower them to pursue a life-changing career. We are committed to broadening and deepening our impact for the good of the actuarial profession, especially in the areas of diversity and inclusion, social mobility, financial literacy and rewarding excellence."

IFoA Foundation Chair, Kartina Tahir Thomson
